Blue Mass offers prayers for law enforcement

HOUSTON

Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office and their families were invited to the annual Blue Mass at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown Houston.

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo prayed for the officers and the people they serve.

"[Christ's] message was to honor, to respect the little man," DiNardo said during the event. "The people in our society who need help the most, the lowest of the people that need help, mental health patients, those that officers work with quite often."

The first Blue Mass was celebrated in Baltimore in 1934 as a way to show appreciation and support for those who protect the community.
