Two more West Nile deaths reported in Texas

DALLAS, TX

Bexar County health officials on Wednesday reported a 77-year-old San Antonio man has become the first West Nile-related death in that county. Dr. Nathan Vincent, who is assistant director of the Metropolitan Health District, says the man was a retired member of the military and one of only three West Nile virus cases diagnosed in the county this year.

Health officials in Bowie County revealed Wednesday that a 70-year-old Texarkana, Texas, woman is the first fatality from the virus in the northeast Texas county.

Mosquitoes spread the virus from birds to people. One in 150 infected people develop severe symptoms including neck stiffness, disorientation, coma and paralysis.
