Austin City Council Oks electric rate hike

AUSTIN, TX

The Austin City Council on Thursday night approved increases for Austin Energy in a plan to raise $71 million. The increases take effect in October.

Authorities say the various increases are needed due to the rising cost of fuel to run Austin Energy power plants. Utility officials say the typical home will pay about $8 more per month for using 1,000 kilowatt-hours.

Austin Energy serves more than 400,000 customers in Travis and Williamson counties.
