NYC officials: 1 dead, 4 hurt in crane accident

NEW YORK

The Metropolitan Transit Authority said a Jan. 10 inspection by the New York City Buildings Department could not be completed because the rig was in operation at the time. A follow-up had been scheduled for Thursday.

A 30-year-old laborer from New Jersey died Tuesday evening when the crane's boom fell and broke apart at a site where the MTA is building an extension of the No. 7 subway line.

The cause of the accident was under investigation by a variety of agencies, including the police department and the Manhattan district attorney.
