Houston is remembering an architectural pioneer who broke barriers during the era of segregation.

John Saunders Chase died Thursday at the age of 87.

The Maryland native was the first African American to enroll in the school of architecture at the University of Texas at Austin.

He graduated in 1952 and became a professor at Texas Southern University.

Chase designed several buildings on the Houston campus and helped design the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Chase will be buried in Houston on Wednesday.
