Police: Man fatally shot by motel owner

HOUSTON

It happened around 1am at the Legacy Inn Motel on Dodson near the Eastex Freeway. Police say a man in his 30s arrived, acting very erratically. He was loud and was apparently waking people up, even destroying property inside the hotel lobby, including an AC unit and furniture, and damaging people's vehicles.

The motel manager was the only one armed, according to police. He asked the man to leave, but when he felt threatened, he called 911 and then shot the man.

"(He was) damaging vehicles, knocked over a motorcycle and tried to get into a car. He was actually jumping on top of his own vehicle and damaged the hood of it," said Officer John Villarreal with the HPD Homicide Division. "He was told several times by the manager of this property to leave."

When he didn't leave, police say the victim was shot once in the chest and then later died. Investigators are awaiting toxicology reports to determine if the man was under influence of alcohol or drugs.

The hotel owner is at HPD headquarters being questioned. There are no charges being filed right now. The case will likely be referred to a Harris County grand jury.
