As young children played outside Friday night, police say there was a gun battle in the back of the Villa Rosa Apartments on South Willow near Wilcrest.
According to Houston Police Department homicide detectives, it started as an argument between a resident's son and the apartment security guard.
When the son's father got word of the verbal altercation, police say the father came outside with a gun. That's when the shootout began.
"[We heard] a few shots, like 12 or something like that," one neighbor said. "Imagine two guns going empty."
The father was killed.
The security guard was rushed to the hospital. He was reportedly shot in the leg.
Some neighbors, who are still shocked at the deadly shootout in their backyard, say they still believe the security guard was only trying to protect residents.
"I think it is unnecessary. You know, why do you want to be against the people that take care of you? Because the security guard is just doing his job," the neighbor said.
The security guard is in stable condition at the hospital. HPD is still investigating.
No names have been released.
