Houston Zoo opens new elephant habitat

HOUSTON

The exhibit has grown by 1.5 acres. The zoo also added an 80,000 'elephant sized' swimming pool. It's not being filled all the way just yet because they want the two young calves, Baylor and Tupelo, to gradually get accustomed to swimming in deep water.

The zoo also unveiled a shaded, 200-seat demonstration area.

Zoo officials say the elements of the habitat are designed to encourage the elephant's natural behaviors, such as foraging, browsing, rolling, bathing, and dust bathing.

To celebrate the occasion, zoo employees gave the seven elephants some pumpkins to smash.
