It was on August 30, 1836 that the Allen brothers bought 6,000 acres of land along Buffalo Bayou and named the area "Houston" in honor of General Sam Houston, the hero of the Battle of San Jacinto.
The culmination of birthday events is a conference coming October 29. It's titled "Milestones and Arrivals: 175 Years of Coming to Houston."
The conference will be held at the University of Houston Hotel and will discuss the 10-county Houston region's history of immigration and diversity.
