Houston police: DNA links 2 unsolved slayings

HOUSTON No arrests have been made in the 1983 stabbing death of 20-year-old Alexis Canton and the 1989 rape and strangling of 28-year-old Rosie Harris.

The Houston Chronicle reported late Wednesday that the deaths have been connected by a single strand of DNA.

Sgt. Mike Peters began re-examining Canton's case in 2009 and found blood evidence that could be submitted for DNA testing.

Peters months later was notified that the results, processed through a federal crime databank, matched evidence from the Harris killing.

Peters says he believes the killer was someone who lived in the west Houston neighborhood and that publicity about the DNA link might generate tips to law enforcement.
