Fort Worth Star-Telegram cutting 45 jobs

FORT WORTH, TX Publisher Gary Wortel announced Wednesday that 45 positions were being eliminated as well as several unfilled positions. He says the cuts affect almost all departments, including news, advertising, production and circulation.

Wortel blames the continuing slump in advertising revenues affecting the industry. He says many Star-Telegram advertisers have reduced spending, a sign that the economy hasn't bounced back from the recession.

But he says he's optimistic for the future of the Star-Telegram, which is owned by the McClatchy Co.

Earlier this year the newspaper laid off about two dozen employees and eliminated several open jobs.

The paper cut more than 180 jobs through layoffs and attrition from 2008 through last year.
