Earthquake in central Indonesia panics residents

JAKARTA, Indonesia The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.4. It says it hit 88 miles (140 kilometers) south of Cirebon city and was centered nearly 50 miles (78 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.

El Shinta radio says the temblor triggered widespread panic in the nearby town of Garut.

Indonesia is located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
