Fire forces evacuation of nursing home clinic

HOUSTON It started around midnight Saturday at a nursing home building that was being used as a clinic for the elderly in southeast Houston.

It happened on Westover at Harbrook in southeast Houston. Firefighters were able to get the flames out quickly and none of the nursing home residents were injured.

There was no word Sunday on how the fire started.

This is the second fire of this kind in the Houston area within a week. A fire broke out at an assisted living facility in west Houston last Monday.

Fire investigators say an electrical short caused the massive fire. Nearly 250 residents -- many of them in wheelchairs -- were forced out when the fire started. No one was hurt.
