Sugar Land's rate for these crimes in 2010 was 23.93, down from 24.68 in 2009, which was below the state's rate of 45.07 and the nation at 34.65. Since 2006, investigative clearance rates have improved by 11.2 percent.
Police say during 2010 they focused on non-violent crime categories, including shoplifting and vehicle burglaries. Several police initiatives are addressing property crimes, including a partnership with retail districts and neighborhoods to encourage the use of cameras for security purposes. SLPD also utilizes a special task force that focuses exclusively on vehicle burglaries, shopper safety and public education.
"We are committed to providing exceptional public safety services and taking a leadership role in building community partnerships," said Sugar Land Police Chief Doug Brinkley. "It's important for us to stay connected to the community, which enables us to work together to create a safe environment to live and work."
Last year, Sugar Land was named America's 12th Safest City, a distinction based on an analysis of FBI crime statistics.
