Mexican government drone crashes in El Paso

A Mexican government official says a drone that crashed in El Paso this week had been flying over Mexican airspace, but a malfunction forced controllers to crash it across the border. The official spoke to The Associated Press on Friday on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the issue.

He says the small unmanned aircraft belonged to the Mexican federal police and had been on a routine patrol.

The crash occurred after sunset Tuesday behind a house in a former agricultural area near the U.S.-Mexico border. No one was injured.

Border Patrol agent Ramiro Cordero says after someone found the drone, authorities examined it and later returned it to Mexican officials at one of the international bridges.
