It happened at Cook elementary school on Lockwood. We're told by the Houston ISD officials that the student is a first grader. He's said to have been getting something out of his backpack Tuesday when a teacher spotted the marijuana inside.

According to the district, the boy told the teacher that a relative had put the pot in his backpack to give to another relative after school.

HISD police are conducting a preliminary investigation. Children's Protective Services is handling the rest of the case.

Child welfare officials say they do not believe the child knew what he was carrying and are now investigating his home life.
