The school district says the teacher admitted to having a relationship with the male student off school grounds. The two were fairly close in age, but even so, children's mental health experts say this would have been an abusive situation for the young man.
It was the talk in the hallways at Lamar Consolidated high school in Rosenberg Wednesday. And now, that teacher is no longer employed by the Lamar Consolidated ISD.
"He was talking about it in class and then she admitted to it and then it just kinda got around and so she, I guess, either quit or was fired," said Lamar Consolidated ISD student Mason Countiss.
But it's hardly an isolated scandal. A Google search of the terms "female" "teacher" "sex" and "student" turns up 192,000 results in less than a second; reports from Florida, Long Island, Mississippi, Albany, New York, and more. At the DePelchin Children's Center, a program coordinator tells us it is a seriously underreported problem.
"I think we're hearing about it more," said Jennipher Cole with DePelchin. "I think people are talking about it more. I think as time goes by, it gets more OK to talk about abusive situations."
And it is abusive, says Cole, even though he is an 18-year-old student and she is a first year teacher.
"It is more likely that he is being taken advantage of because this is someone who has authority and power over him, saying that this is right, this is appropriate behavior," Cole continued. "So it really skews that ability to make a choice about healthy relationships."
Back in Rosenberg, the police are investigating.
The Lamar Consolidated ISD released a statement Wednesday, saying that the teacher made a serious mistake and that the district cannot condone or defend her actions. They also tell us the teacher was removed from the classroom immediately after a report was made to a campus administrator.
