Police say Christiana Sarty was home alone Thursday with her 8-year-old sister when she either fell or jumped through the table in their apartment in Providence.
The glass punctured her leg and Christiana collapsed after the two girls ran out looking for help. A neighbor called emergency rescuers.
Police say the 11-year-old girl died of blood loss at Hasbro Children's Hospital.
It was unclear Friday where the girls' mother was when the accident occurred. A police official said she was too distraught to provide details to detectives.
The 8-year-old was taken into custody by the state's child welfare agency for physical and emotional evaluation.
