It happened at a duplex on Sam Wilson near Hershe just east of downtown. Fire crews arrived 60 seconds after the 911 call was made, but their efforts were not enough to save the children.

The fire was called in around 12:20am and when crews arrived on the scene, there was an extensive amount of smoke coming from the front door. A resident, who is believed to be the mother of the children who died, was outside telling crews there were two people still inside.

Once the fire was put out, the bodies of the two children were found. Arson investigators are looking for an official cause.

A preliminary investigation by the Houston Police Department determined the mother of the victims left two stove burners on and left the residence for a short period of time. The mother stated when she returned, she saw smoke coming from the duplex.

The mother was questioned and released without charges, pending the outcome of the investigation and the autopsy results.

Officials said they believe the children were about 18 months old. The victims' names haven't been released.
