It happened about 2:15am on I-45 near Patton. Investigators say the driver of an SUV collided head-on with a wrong way driver, who was heading north on the southbound lanes. Authorities are trying to figure out how that driver ended up on the wrong side of the freeway.

"The information that we received from emergency personnel is that the driver is suspected, that he could possibly be intoxicated," said Sgt. David Morgan with the Houston Police Department.

Authorities are waiting for a toxicology report to determine if that driver was, in fact, intoxicated at the time of the fatal accident.

The freeway was shut down for at least four hours as police investigated the accident.

The driver of the white Malibu was transported to Ben Taub Hospital with injuries. Authorities say he does face a number of charges. Check realtime traffic in the area here.
