The Larmouths were asleep around 5:20 a.m. when the speeding car's driver lost control, hit two curbs and then smashed into the house, said Haltom City police Sgt. Terry Stayer. As the car went through the wall, it hit the mattress, causing it to fold over the couple. The car stopped on top of the couple, Stayer said.
"The mattress protected the couple," Stayer said. "The woman managed to walk out of the room, while her husband managed to get some debris off of him."
The 30-year-old man who was driving the car ran away, but police caught him at his home a few blocks away after finding a Fort Worth police citation with his address inside the car and following a bloody trail.
The driver, who was not identified, was being treated at Harris Methodist Fort Worth hospital for a head injury, police said.
Investigators do not believe alcohol was involved.
