Man dies in custody following deadly rampage

HOUSTON It happened around 10pm on Veterans Memorial near Marcolin. Police say the suspect fought over money with another man inside a store. He allegedly shot and killed that man, then started shooting at a clerk before running outside and carjacking another customer.

A few minutes later, he crashed near a deputy constable patrolling Veterans Memorial. The suspect then reportedly tried to carjack the deputy, until wrecker drivers came to the deputy's aid.

"Wrecker drivers saw that the officer was losing the fight and they went to assist him. A couple of wrecker drivers held him down to get him handcuffed," said Jason Robles with the Houston Police Department.

After he was placed in handcuffs, the suspect went into cardiac arrest and later died at Ben Taub Hospital. Police believe he was high on drugs and that likely led to his death.

Investigators are waiting for an official cause of death from the medical examiner's office.
