Houstonian to become youngest bishop

SAN ANTONIO, TX At 41, Oscar Cantu, of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, will be the youngest bishop in the United States.

"I am humbled by the confidence the Holy Father has shown in me and I look forward to getting to know the people of the Archdiocese of San Antonio," Cantu said.

He will be ordained as bishop on June 2 by Jose H. Gomez, the archbishop of San Antonio.

"Bishop-elect Cantu will be a blessing to the people of the Archdiocese of San Antonio," Gomez said. "His knowledge of the faith and well-rounded pastoral experience has prepared him well for the work that is ahead of him."

Cantu was born and raised in Houston. He was ordained a priest in 1994. He is currently the pastor of his childhood parish in Houston.

He replaces Patrick J. Zurek, who became the new bishop for the Amarillo Diocese.
