A four-tusk mastodon skull thought to be the largest of its kind was sold at auction Sunday for $191,200. Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries featured the piece at its Natural History Auction. Another item, a 26-pound gold nugget from Mexico known as the Boot of Cortez, sold for nearly $1.6 million, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday in its online edition.

The Volkswagen-sized mastodon skull, discovered in a gravel pit in La Grange in 2004, received the most attention.

Joe Taylor, director and curator of the Mt. Blanco Fossil Museum in Crosbyton, preserved and restored the piece with a team of volunteers.
