Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt on Thursday touted big results from a crime crackdown in east Houston. The crime fighting initiative and public safety campaign along the East Freeway corridor lasted from November 1 through December 31.

During that time, crime decreased. Houston police investigated 191 crimes compared to 295 during the same period in 2006. Officers say the crackdown led to a 49 percent drop in motor vehicle burglaries and a 27 percent drop in auto thefts.

Numerous residents in that area signed pledges to help police fight crime.
