Houston woman makes a fortune with jewelry design

HOUSTON

Scott is always working on the next big thing. Twelve years ago, working out of her apartment with $500, she started a small jewelry collection and peddled her wares to Austin boutiques.

"If I had been in New York City or Los Angeles, and walked into those boutiques, they would have laughed me out the front door. These stores gave this mom a chance, and they gave me my wings," Scott said.

Now, Kendra Scott jewelry is a multi-million dollar global empire. We visited her headquarters in Austin, where every piece of jewelry is meticulously dreamed, designed and made by hand.

"It takes hundreds of tries in some cases to get exactly the right finish we want, and when we get it, it's perfect," she said.

Kendra's designs are based on semi-precious stones and vibrant colors.

"Go bright or go home," she said.

The jewelry has become favorites of Hollywood celebrities, but they've also remained attainable, starting around $50. Also hugely popular is her color bar, where you personalize your own pieces.

"I want these turquoise stones in my earring, or these mother of pearl," said Scott.

And they're made right there in the store. This mother of three finds inspiration everywhere, from birds to chandeliers.

"From the peacocks, to the pinks, to the greens, to the blues," she said.

But for this businesswoman, it's all about giving back. Philanthropy is a cornerstone of her business, and no charity is turned away.

"We always have something to give, the impact we're making in the communities where our stores are, is significant, and that makes me the most proud," said Scott.

The new Kendra Scott store opens in The Woodlands February 24. She hopes to have 18 to 20 stores open by the end of the year. And you will not only see more stores, but more products also, becoming a lifestyle brand. Handbags could be the next big thing.
