The Dallas Morning News reports that emails exchanged before the Feb. 9 trip show two principals saying only boys should see "Red Tails." A third principal disagreed. Another questioned whether the PG-13 movie was appropriate for fifth-graders.
At least 5,000 fifth-grade boys would go to theaters Feb. 9 to see "Red Tails," about the legendary Tuskegee Airmen. Many girls instead watched "Akeelah and the Bee," a fictional story about a girl who competes in a spelling bee.
Interim schools chief Shirley Ison-Newsome would say in an email afterward that the students had a "wonderful experience."
