Two-alarm fire rips through southwest Houston apartments

HOUSTON Firefighters got the call about a fire at the apartments on Richmond near Briarpark around 2am. They arrived to find smoke and flames coming from a two-story apartment building. Firefighters had to rescue a family that was still in their apartment.

"They were still in the apartment when we got here to alert them to the fire," said Deputy Chief Terry Stone with the Houston Fire Department. "At this point, we've got fifty firefighters that are working on this apartment building."

One person was treated for smoke inhalation. The fire destroyed six units and damaged eight others.

The cause of the fire is unknown. The blaze is under investigation.
