Accused cop shooter appears in court

HOUSTON Patrick Freeman, 19, is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and burglary. A judge kept his bond at $100,000. Freeman allegedly shot Officer Frank Pierce when the officer responded to a burglary at an apartment in west Houston on Monday. The officer remains in the hospital in good condition.

A spokesperson for Freeman's family says Freeman claims he did not know Pierce was a police officer.

"He had on uniform pants, undershirt with a badge on the breast, carrying his raid jacket, his police jacket and his gear, police gear," said Assistant Harris County District Attorney Don Smyth. "Nobody would mistake him for anything other than he's a police officer."

A 14-year-old suspect is also in police custody.
