Galveston mayor spending third day in Cuba

Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas is in her third day of a fact-finding mission in Cuba. [SIGN UP: Get headlines and breaking news sent to you]

During talks Friday, she learned it usually takes a large a large number of troops and police to convince residents to evacuate during a hurricane. Cuban officials told her the heavy military and police presence makes residents feel secure about leaving their homes. Troops also help residents move furniture and goods.

Hurricane Ike hit Cuba before making landfall in Galveston. There were seven deaths in Cuba, far fewer than the number of people who died in Texas.
