Man rescued from burning home

HOUSTON The fire broke out on Broyles and Collingsworth in northeast Houston. Elijah Welch says he was driving by when the victim's nephew stopped him, asking him to call 911. The two men had trouble getting inside because of a set of burglar bars. That's when they used an ax to break a window and then ripped out the AC unit

"I tried to push through the air conditioner and once I got through the AC that's the last time I heard him scream. And they came and they (firefighters) told me to get out of the way. I'm glad I was here. I'm glad I was here," said Welch.

Welch cut his hand in the process, but he will be okay. The man inside the home was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

No word on what caused the fire, but investigators say someone connected electricity to the house from the power line out front.
