Student dies after collapsing in gym

SUGAR LAND, TX (KTRK) Jocelyn Arias, an eighth grader, was participating in after-school basketball practice in the school's gymnasium on Wednesday when she collapsed. Paramedics were called as the staff administered CPR and used the school's defibrillator as they have been trained to do until EMS arrived at the school.

Jocelyn was taken from the campus to Sugar Land Methodist Hospital where she later died.

Principal Lisa Padron said in a letter to parents, "This news has shocked and saddened our staff and our student body, and our hearts and prayers go out to Jocelyn's family."

Parents were urged to discuss the situation with their children. Crisis counselors have been made available on campus.
