HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Lights, camera, action. Some Houston area high school students are tuning their broadcasting skills in hopes of becoming the next big newsmakers.

"We want our students to be great communicators," said teacher Andrea Brown. "We really want to encourage our students to really put faith in themselves and really believe in themselves."

Everyday, Yates High School students produce a morning newscast on YouTube. Yates is Houston's older communications agent school in the city.

"Probably one of our most celestialous alumni is Roland Martin, who is on CNN and TV One," said Brown.

From TV to radio broadcast, graphic design and photography, the arts are front and center.

"It's one of the reasons why I come to school," said photography student Juan Tumas, who showed us a photo he took of a bee pollinating a flower. "I had to get real close since I could not zoom in. And I was kind of afraid they would sting me. But I was able to take the picture."

Film is another area of study. Elissa Earls says she has found her passion in the art.

"I love how you can capture any moment at anytime with the camera," said Earls.

Earls showed us a PSA she and other students produced to raise awareness of cyberbullying. She said the project only got her even more excited about coming to school and the art of communication.

"So those are the skills that I think can transfer into any field that they want to go into" said Brown.
