Hot weekend, rain chances with a tropical disturbance next week

Rain chances stay low today, but a tropical disturbance arriving in early September looks to boost rain chances all over again.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- This steamy and sunny weekend continues for Sunday before rain chances climb once again next week as we keep an eye on the Gulf.

Sunday will be another sunny and hot day with a 10% chance for a stray shower with the sea breeze. High temperatures will climb into the upper 90s with an afternoon heat index between 102 and 106. An Ozone Pollution Watch is in effect Sunday for Brazoria, Galveston and Harris counties.

Should we be concerned about this tropical disturbance?

It's definitely worth keeping an eye on, but current development odds sit at 30%. That low could continue to slowly develop and try to organize as it tracks westward along the Gulf Coast early next week. That said, tropical moisture will likely arrive over Southeast Texas Tuesday with that tropical air lingering through at least Wednesday. This should yield scattered downpours both afternoons, and it's rain we all need.

How much rain are we talking about for next week?

Right now we have a 20% chance for rain Monday, 60% Tuesday and Wednesday and 30% on Thursday and Friday. The higher rain chances for Tuesday and Wednesday are associated with that region of high tropical moisture that has a low chance of forming into a named system. No matter what, that moisture will disperse across the Gulf Coast early next week and could bring pockets of heavy downpours to the Houston area. And those totals greatly depend on the development of a potential tropical low and where it tracks early on next week. That said, portions of Southeast Texas could pick up and inch or two of rain depending on when and where those showers and storms form. By Thursday and Friday we'll still have enough moisture around the region for the seasonal sea breeze to help produce daily pop ups, though any tropical trouble should be out of here by then.
