A Texas board approved adding Bible stories to required reading for the state's more than 5 million public school students.
HISD Superintendent Mike Miles called the unauthorized spending a "good-faith error." However, a board trustee described the purchases as "astronomical" and "troubling."
The vote to formally terminate Superintendent Elizabeth Fagen's contract comes after several tumultuous months, including a Title IX investigation against her husband, who also used to be athletic director.
"At this point, there's nothing else to cut. I am not sure what else there is to cut to get us $80 million down, except for cutting a school," Board President Kristin K. Tassin said.
The focus on HISD's transparency continues, as community pressure reversed the district's audit committee's decision to close its doors during meetings after 20 years of being open to the public.
If passed, the district will use the additional funding on teacher pay based on years of service to district, among other things. A public hearing will be held on Aug. 26 at the Magnolia ISD Event Center.
