Governor Greg Abbott announced NRG will erect a new 455-megawatt natural gas facility at its Greens Bayou plant in northeast Houston.
The fire started after a vehicle drove through a fence and hit a pipeline valve. But with the area closed off, even to first responders, it's unclear if anyone was in the car when it crashed and if anyone else was nearby at the time.
One resident said it felt like a train rolled underneath her home when the explosion happened on the other side of the fence. She's one of two women who spoke with ABC13 with no idea what they'll ultimately be coming home to.
SkyEye video showed the flames continuing to burn on Tuesday morning. The Deer Park Office of Emergency Management extended the expected burn-off timeline through later Tuesday.
Energy Transfer, the owner of the pipeline that exploded on Monday, said the product needs hours to burn off. Early reports stated a chemical smell in the air.
Leaders are trying to sell a solution to rolling blackouts with the power plant. But neighbors are concerned over air quality, to which the Sugar Land mayor insists will comply with environmental standards.
