HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An investigation is underway after a suspected thief crashed into a Bellaire police vehicle Saturday morning, according to officials.

On April 14, at about 8:20 a.m., police said someone spotted a suspect breaking into several vehicles in the 4300 block of Edith.

Investigators said the suspect fled the city park in a black SUV with paper tags.

Later, one of the victim's credit cards was reportedly used at retail stores in southwest Houston.

That's when Bellaire police followed the trail and found the suspect's vehicle in the Target parking lot in the 8500 block of Main Street.

The suspect took off on Braesmain Drive toward South Braeswood Boulevard before being cut off by police. Authorities said the suspect turned around back south on Braesmain and swerved at a police car, striking it "almost head-on."

After the crash, the driver attempted to run but was taken into custody at the scene.

Two Bellaire police officers were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital with minor injuries, according to an update in a news release.

Investigators said the suspect sustained minor injuries and was also transported.

"Numerous purses and other items believed to have been taken in other car burglaries in the area were found in the vehicle along with items the suspect appeared to have purchased with stolen credit cards," police said in the news release.
