HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) -- Smoothies make a great meal year-round, but in the summer time, a cool refreshing drink that's filling is often the perfect go-to, especially since they're jam-packed with nutrients and take less than two minutes to blend, pour, and go!
At Big and Juicy Juice Bar inside BIG Power Yoga, Liz Castillo mixes up smoothie blends on a regular basis, but in the summer, one of her most popular concoctions is for hydration and post-workout recovery. She calls it the Cycles for Success, since it was originally created for the MS-150 team. The key ingredients are coconut water and lemon for hydration and chia seeds for protein and fulfillment.
Cycles of Success
3 oz orange juice
4 oz coconut water
3/4 cup frozen mango
3/4 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 lemon, peeled
1 tbsp chia seeds
If you're trying to get your metabolism revving, the Yogi Glow smoothie helps with digestion and aids in burning calories. The key ingredients are ginger, which boosts your metabolism and pineapple, which has an enzyme that's naturally occurring and great for digestion.
Yogi Glow
6 oz carrot juice
1/2 orange, peeled
1 slice of pineapple
1 thin slice of ginger
1 cup frozen mango
Finally, if you're trying to detox, Castillo says go for the Green! The Grounded Green includes lots of spinach and kale to help your body get back in balance. The pineapple, again, helps with digestion, and the coconut water is beneficial for hydrating the body. This is perfect to reset the body after eating and drinking poorly.
Grounded Green
