Trail riders settle in at Memorial Park before parade
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- After a long journey, trail riders are settling in at Memorial Park ahead of Saturday's parade.
For many of those who made the journey, the trail ride is a tradition that has been part of their family for decades.
"I've raised six children on this trail ride. We're a family deal -- we have a lot of family on this ride," said Joe Cantrell, who is celebrating 40 years as a trail boss.
More than a dozen different trail rides bring 3,000 guests into Houston from all around the region. The longest trail, from Vaqueros, spans 353 miles, while the shortest, spanning only 70 miles, begins in Montgomery.
Judges will evaluate the trail riders based on their safety, behavior and -- most importantly -- commitment to western heritage.
"It's been great, and all the people that have come out and dedicated their time and energy, it's just awesome," said Andrew Cantu, vice president of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
