John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is America's first urban refuge.

PHILADELPHIA -- John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is America's first urban refuge, and its celebrating 50 years this year.

It's a place where you can see turtles, hummingbirds, mink, fox, bunnies, and deer, along with hundreds of species of birds, in a 1,000-acre sanctuary, bordered by busy highways and bustling city neighborhoods.

The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Department and there are 10 miles of trail to explore with lots of activities to enjoy from bird walks, plant walks, bug walks, bat and butterfly walks to kayaking, archery, fishing and a mentored deer hunt.

The refuge is famous for its birdwatching with osprey, bald eagles, green heron, and secretive marsh birds like the least bittern hiding in plain site.

Walk the Darby Creek Trail and youll see wild rice blooming in the tidal marsh and a view of the city skyline off in the distance.
