If you've ever seen a drummer perform, it's clear that beating down on a drum set is exhausting. Now, drumming is part of an actual workout routine.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- If you've ever seen a drummer perform, it's clear that beating down on a drum set is exhausting. Now, drumming is part of an actual workout routine: Pound Fitness.

Two best friends from California, who happened to also be drummers, started the fitness craze after they realized that standing at a drum set instead of sitting while performing was a serious workout.

When Fit Athletic Club group fitness director Kelley Davidson took Pound for the first time, it re-ignited her passion for exercise.

"I've been teaching for 20 years, and I've enjoyed workout out with rhythm and music, but I never found something before this that makes you part of the music," Davidson explained.

For instructor Angie Nichols, Pound has become her escape.

"Pound is an awesome workout to get rid of that stress," Nichols said.

Davidson and Nichols recently introduced pound to Fit Athletic Club.

"Pound is a drumming-based workout. It's rhythmic. It's a full-body cardio jam session," said Davidson.

"There's a lot of oblique work, a lot of twisting. A lot of squats and lunges are incorporated into this workout," Nichols explained.

The ripstix used during the class are only a quarter pound each, but you're sure to feel them as you pound.

"Because they're weighted, they shift the body slightly off surface, so you are engaging your core and back muscles," added Davidson.

"After the first time you do it, you're going to feel sore in places you've never imagined," Nichols promised.
