HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- We'll see widespread rain return to Southeast Texas on Wednesday as a messy low pressure system blows through Houston, and this is just a preview of what may come our way this weekend.

Moisture will increase overnight keeping the sky cloudy with a 10-20% chance of showers. There's enough moisture and lift coming in for widespread rain throughout the day Wednesday, with a few claps of thunder mixing in. At this time, we're not expecting any severe weather or widespread flooding but there will be some big puddles on our roadways from time to time. Rain chances will peak around midday and then drop after sunset.

Temperatures will start off in the upper 50s and low 60s around sunrise and warm into the upper 60s and low 70s during the afternoon.

How much rain could we get on Wednesday?

We are expecting most to pick up less than an inch, but there could be some isolated spots that get up to 2 inches of rain.

Are there any cold fronts coming this week?

Yes! Our next cold front will arrive early Thursday morning, drying out the atmosphere Thursday and the first half of Friday. This front will come with a lot of clouds to keep temperatures chilly. Highs are only expect to peak in the 50s for Friday and Saturday.

How much rain are we expecting this weekend?

Saturday brings a 40% chance of scattered showers, but the main rain even will start start Saturday night continue through most of Sunday. Widespread rain on Sunday, heavy at times, could drop 1-3" across Southeast Texas. No severe weather is expected at this time, but a strong storm cannot be ruled out along with some water-logged roadways and minor street flooding.

When could we get our first freeze in Houston?

We aren't seeing any signs of freezing weather over the next 10 days, but if next week's cold front comes in a little stronger than expected, a light freeze is possible north of I-10. Otherwise, long range projections indicate we'll have to wait until the last days of December for a decent chance of a freeze. On average, Houston's first freeze occurs during the second week of December.
