HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Community leaders and family members are demanding an independent investigation following a deadly shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.

On Tuesday, ICE claims they were conducting a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation to arrest a man they say was living in the country illegally. ICE alleges that the man, identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, attempted to evade arrest, rammed his car into an ICE vehicle, and refused commands to stop.

The agency said the man tried to run over an agent, leading to the officer firing his weapon in what ICE claims is self-defense. ICE states that the man was hit and was taken to the hospital, where he died.

On Wednesday, family members and advocates held a press conference in response to the deadly shooting.

"I want to tell you about my dad," Ronaldo Salgado, Lorenzo Salgado's oldest son, said. "He was a hard-working family man who never wanted his name to be known by anyone outside of his family. He wanted nothing else in life but to provide for his wife and see his sons become great people."

Ronaldo said his father, who was on his way to work that morning, had been in the country for nearly 35 years and was in the process of obtaining his work permit.

Rep. Sylvia Garcia, Commissioner Lesley Briones, and Rep. Christian Menefee were among those who attended Wednesday's news conference, calling for the agency to be transparent in its investigation.

"After nearly 35 years, working to give us the American dream, he made the choice to begin the process of obtaining his American dream," Ronaldo said, also pleading for a full investigation into his father's death. "He did not deserve to die."

In a statement on Tuesday, ICE told ABC13 the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General is leading an investigation into the agent-involved shooting, while the FBI is leading the investigation into the potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer.
