HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An investigation is underway in east Houston following a deadly shooting involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, according to the agency.
Eyewitness News is at the scene, where heavy law enforcement presence was seen.
On Tuesday, the Houston Fire Department said crews were dispatched at 6:30 a.m. to a shooting call in the 6800 block of Canal Street at Wayside. According to HFD, the man suffered a gunshot to his abdomen and was taken to Ben Taub Hospital.
ICE later released a statement that claims they were conducting a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation to arrest a man they say was living in the country illegally. ICE alleges that the man, identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, attempted to evade arrest, rammed his car into an ICE vehicle, and refused commands to stop.
The agency also said in the statement that the man tried to run over an agent, leading to the officer firing his weapon in what ICE claims is self-defense. ICE states that the man was hit and was taken to the hospital, where he died.
According to ICE, the FBI is leading the investigation.
