HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A teacher in southeast Houston has been charged with having sex with a student after a girl allegedly discovered text messages on her boyfriend's phone that suggested he had sex with his male teacher.

Steven Amedeo, 39, is employed as a culinary arts teacher at Milby High School. The accusations came as a shock to students who interacted with him.

"It makes me feel like sad maybe," said Christopher Salazar, who visited Amedeo's cooking classroom to buy food. "Because he was a good teacher, I didn't know he did that to students."

Salazar described Amedeo as cool and fairly popular. Court documents show a different side of the three-year teacher. They allege that a student's girlfriend first discovered texts between Amedeo and her boyfriend. The female student then alerted authorities. An investigation was conducted by the HISD Police Department.

According to court documents, Amedeo and the underage male student allegedly met last December outside of school grounds, picking the teen up at the end of the block where he lives.

Police say Amedeo and the teen ran errands before returning to the teacher's apartment, where the two kissed and then had sex in the man's bedroom.

The alleged victim gave police a detailed drawing of the teacher's apartment, which investigators say matched the layout of Amadeo's place.

Eyewitness News tried to get in contact with Amedeo but he didn't answer the door of his Heights area apartment. However, he has posted bond on charges that he had sex with the student.

"That's really shocking to hear because you send your kids to school to learn and get an education and stuff like that happens," said Laura Gonzalez, a parent picking up her child from Milby's summer school program.

HISD released a statement, which said in part:

"The allegations of inappropriate conduct were first reported in late April. School administrators immediately notified HISD police/CPS and removed the teacher from the campus. The teacher is no longer employed with HISD."
