Young girl, grandfather hospitalized after home catches fire

Firefighters rescued a young girl and her grandfather after a fire consumed their home

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston firefighters rescued a girl from a burning house in Acres Homes.

One neighbor told Eyewitness News the northwest Houston home quickly went up in flames just before 10:30pm last night.

The Houston Fire Department says when they arrived, the three adults who live at the home were already out of the house. However, a young child was still inside.

A neighbor says she woke to people frantically trying to get the family, which includes a couple in their 60s, their adult daughter and her 6-year-old Kiamra Steeles out of the house.

"I just panicked and I left out the house, I just panicked." Kiamra's mother, Tiara says she woke to the sound of her own mother screaming.

HFD says when firefighters arrived, the adults were out and the grandfather had suffered burns. Firefighters had to go in for Kiamra whom they found unconscious in a back bedroom.

"I commend the fire department, as soon as they knew there was a baby trapped, they went into hero action, and they got her out," said neighbor, Evelyn Gordon.

"Today is her graduation to go to the first grade," said Kiamra's mother Tiara Charleston.

The grandfather and his granddaughter were taken to Memorial Hermann hospital. She is listed in serious condition with burns and smoke inhalation. He grandfather suffered burns and smoke inhalation. No word on his condition

Kiamra is expected to be OK.

Arson investigators will determine the cause of the fire and where it started.
