Daycare worker charged after baby dies from brain damage

OXON HILL, MD -- A childcare worker has been charged in the death of a 9-month-old baby.

Beatrice Manning is accused in the death of little Savanah Wright back in December.

For the last 14 years, Manning has operated an unlicensed day care center in her Oxon Hill, Maryland home called "Little Giggles."

While Manning will not talk to reporters about what happened, her neighbor Regina Alexander says she has a great reputation.

"My thoughts are this," Mannin says, "That she's been a good neighbor, it appears she's been an excellent daycare provider."

Police, however, say on December 2, Savanah Wright was dropped off at Manning's house at 7am. At 11am, Manning allegedly called 911 to say the baby was unresponsive.

By 5pm, the hospital calls police to report the child has brain damage.

Two days later, Savanah Wright died.

"That is happened at the hands of someone who was entrusted with her, who was supposed to take care of her, that's the last one we expect to harm our children," says Prince George's County Police Lt. Dave Coleman.

Savanah's parents were unable to be reached for this report.

Police say the baby died because of blunt force trauma to the head. The autopsy report shows the child's injuries happened in Manning's care.

The daycare owner is being held without bond.
