HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police are investigating a deadly home invasion at an apartment complex in west Houston.

Homicide detectives were called to the Avalon at Royal Oaks apartment complex off 2600 Crescent Park Drive around 5am Monday.

Houston police tell us 4 to 5 men kicked down a door of a downstairs unit at about 3:45 Monday morning. They were armed, masked and demanded money from the couple living inside. At some point, police say the suspects shot and killed the male resident before getting away. The female resident who lives at the unit survived.

Neighbors tell us they are not surprised to hear a deadly shooting took place just a few doors down.

"I always hear something like all the time, like I said, I never come out of the house unless I go to work so it's just shocking pretty scary right now," said Tanaka Hillisann.

Police say the suspects took off after the shooting.

"They left on foot so it's unknown if they had a vehicle in the area or not," said John Parker with HPD Homicide.

Police have not released the suspects' description.
