While many of those improvements make your house more comfortable, your home's tax assessment will not suffer if you did not add value to the home.
For instance, if you converted a bedroom into a home office, added a fresh coat of paint, replaced an old fence, or even upgraded your air conditioner, the Harris County Appraisal District does not see those improvements as added value.

But larger projects do add value, and will impact your bill.
These improvements are the kind that often require permits to get the work started.
"Anything that enhances that value such as remodeling the kitchen, adding on a bedroom, putting in a swimming pool would increase the value of their appraisal," said HCAD Chief Appraiser Roland Altinger.
You can find the assessed value on the HCAD website in Harris County. If you think there is an error, you can protest the value, but the deadline to file that protest is May 17.
