NEW YORK -- Police are searching for the woman who abandoned a baby girl Monday at a Manhattan subway station.

Authorities say that when the number 1 uptown train pulled into Columbus Circle at about noon, a woman pushed a stroller with the baby onto the platform, but did not get off the train.

She kept riding as the train pulled out of the station, leaving the baby behind on the platform.

A 33-year old eyewitness waited about 20 minutes with the stroller, and when no one came back to claim the little girl, she notified police.

The baby is about seven months old. She was wearing a white and red blouse with black leggings and Pampers. She is in stable condition at St. Luke's Hospital.

Police say the infant had some eczema on her cheeks and elbows but was not malnourished.

Investigators are trying to identify the baby and the woman who left her, who was described as 20-30 years old.
